Parental unconditional acceptance: An antidote to parental conditional regard

Studies around the world revealed that children's performance is a significant source of parents’ self-worth. This phenomenon particularly salient among Chinese parents because emphasis on interdependent self-construal in face culture. With child-based worth, many feel compelled to use conditional regard minimize failure and maximize success. Yet, parental notorious for its undermining effects well-being. study aimed investigate antecedents consequences unconditional acceptance children, an antidote regard. We conducted priming experiment with 145 randomly assigned worth or self-acceptance conditions. Results showed was inhibitive factor, whereas facilitative factor provision children. Parents primed had more intention provide their turn authoritative responses undesirable behavior. Our findings have practical implications parent education.
